Let the Fear Mongering Begin

By Scott Cavanagh
With September's supposed deadline for assessing the success of the most recent "troop surge" fast approaching, and gas prices sitting at an all-time high, the Bush Administration has once again resorted to it's most tried and true political solution: scare the crap out of everybody!

On Tuesday, a press conference was held by Fran Townsend, the president's homeland security advisor, trumpeting selected findings from an intelligence report that points out the growing strength of the Iraqi insurgency. Coinciding precisely with Congress's planned debate on ending the Iraq War, the media event pointed out the obvious -- terrorist attacks are up everywhere, the Iraqi government is powerless; ignored the reasons for those factors -- never-ending inept occupation, resurgent Taliban support from Afghanistan and Pakistan; and softened-up the public for the inevitable push to extend the September deadline for results in Iraq.
